For thousands of years the American Bison or Buffalo has been part of the landscape of this great country. Lewis and Clark were among the first
white men to observe and record the great herds of the plains in the early 1800’s. They reported “you could see 3000 bison at one time”.
Numbering some 60 million animals in 1805, in just one century the great bison herds were history; and the species neared extinction. Thanks to protection
programs, today there are some 350,000.
Our shop is located in central Indiana on the high ground above The White River. The road in front of our shop was once a well traveled trail, used by
bison and Native Americans, and became part of the Lafayette Trace in the 1800’s. Another road nearby is called “The Buffalo Road” and
there is an American Bison on Indiana’s State Seal.
In honor of this great animal, and its place as an important part of our history, John decided to create a special hand carved bison. John’s bison is
carved from Indiana Black Walnut and is a very accurate depiction of the way they actually look. Walnut was the logical choice in carving this piece,
the dark tones of walnut are the perfect forte for the bison’s dense textured hair. The natural color of the wood compliments the realistic look.
John’s interpretation displays the powerful form of the bison in his natural habitat.
